Today we were back at Curaco de Vélez trying to find the five green flags we saw there two weeks ago and maybe… hopefully… a new bird.
The story is more or less the same as the last time we were there. We did a long six hour scan and found four green flags. Including one new female! Woohoo!
My favorite part of the day was finally getting photos and video of one my green flagged birds. He was foraging on the incoming tide and got close enough for my camera. To top it off he was vigilant! This was a behavior I tried to film (so I can show as an example) last year but never got. It was something I hoped to capture this year so I’m stoked!
Vigilance is a particular behavior I define as when an individual looks up towards the sky. It’s an anti-predator behavior that I measure. But I had no good visual of what the godwits look like when they do it or why it’s a good obvious measure to use. Now I do!
