The season is drawing to an end. We’re wrapping up the last of the data collection and working hard on data entry and proofing. It’s time for the gear to get cleaned, packed up, and organized. But first we have to finish up the veg measurements.
Veg or vegetation measures is probably everyone else’s least favorite part of the season. The fun bird related tasks are over, there aren’t many birds left on plot, and you have to look at plants. Plus it usually means the season is ending, and people are usually beginning to look forward to whatever comes next. A food they’ve been hankering for, a real bed, showers, a new job in a new place.
Today, I finished the last of the nest veg measures for godwits. Garrett helped me out and we doubled our useful effort, so we’d have time to organize and clean tomorrow. We pulled our insect traps up that get collected every morning at 7am.
Tomorrow, everyone will get to sleep in for the first time all season. Then we’ll have a special breakfast of apple pancakes and bacon for the carnivores. We’ll proof and organize.
In a few short, short days two of the guys on the crew will leave for Anchorage. The next day the rest of us will leave.
Garrett and I have four days to celebrate his birthday and bird around the state before we fly south like the HUGOs. Then it's back to New York for another semester of classes!
