We headed to Isla Quinchao today to try see the ten or so individuals we’ve seen there over the last two months. I was hopeful that the high low tide would mean the flock of 5,000 would be in at least one of the bays.
We were wrong. We found about 500 at Curaco de Vélez but no green flags amongst them. We hustled to Chullec - no godwits. So, we hustled to Achao - a much smaller bay that we keep surveying when the other two are empty because it keeps producing green flags in it.
We were disappointed to see a group of only fifty that was getting flushed by people enjoying an absolutely beautiful day. But we persevered, and we found two FEGs - a breeding pair! Male CT and his mate, female 1PM were amongst what turned out to be a flock of 400 (most had been out of sight from where we started). It felt good to get some more focals on each (seen four and three times now) after yesterday. Success!
It’s our second to last day..
on Isla Chiloé! Oh boy!
